Are country people really better than city people as the music tends to imply?

lorianntaylor14 asked the question:

Well listening to enough country music it tends to establish that this culture exists in rural america of people with good moral values and honesty. They always sing about where they come from and that they always sang amazing grace. Oh and don’t forget about the attacks on California. Yeah California mentioned in most songs has a neggative connotation and anyone wearing armani suits is a crook and liar whereas people who wear boots from the country have good work ethic. So is all this true?

I would say there is good and bad with both ‘types’ of people. Well, the stereotypical ones anyway. People are individuals.

Country…..while I dislike the theocracy bullshit, I do like the ability to ‘live off the land’, pro-gun/self defense, tough as nails and self dependent. AND anti-PC (but not racist or hateful. just not afraid to call bullsh*t on white guilt politics, for one example, even if it’s not politically correct)

City……more than likely NOT to be Jesus freaks who want to force it unto us, more tolerant of homosexuals and alternative lifestyles (metal/punk/etc), more open minded in general about many things, BUT also in places like NYC, tend to be ruder, due to the fast paced lifestyle.

yin and yang. weed it out.

Good and bad in both. Just my two cents.

There are less people here in the country.
We tend to know our neighbors where city folks don’t have time for them.
Yes we are more family oriented. Not all people with boots have a good work ethic.
California is a foreign country to us.
Couldn’t understand the people at a gas station, or the motels.
    We still speak English here.

Pop-culture is not a barometer societal norms, even if you could make those kinds of generalizations about people based on where they live. All you can say for sure based on song lyrics is what the songwriter thinks or wants you to think about these places and the people who live there. Remember, the music industry is selling you the images you buy. Some of them are honest, but most of these songs are constructed at least partly because they know you will find them appealing and buy them.

Would it be fair for people in other countries to watch Jerry Springer and assume all Americans act like the people on that show? If not, then you should not do the same thing based on song lyrics.

Granted there are exceptions to every rule, but for the most part, they are. I have lived in both the country and in the city and I wouldn’t give up country life now if someone paid me to move back to the city. Do you know what it is like to be able to sleep at night and not have to lock everything up? Do you know what it is like to have your entire community pitch in to help you when something bad happens? Do you know what it is like to have your neighbor plow out your driveway, not for money but simply out of goodwill? If you live in the city, how many of your neighbors do you actually know? I don’t know what it is that causes the differences in attitude between city people and country people, but that difference definitely exists. I have seen and experienced it first hand.
