Does anyone know appropriate country music for a funeral/memorial?
gruffydd asked the question:
I am planning the memorial of my father who loved country music. I am trying to find appropriate songs to play in the background. He favored country music of the 50s-70s. Patsy Cline, Loretta Lynn, Statler Bros, Glen Campbell, Roger Miller, Johnny Cash (trying to remember what was in his collection when I was a child). If someone could come up with some song titles, or a playlist, I could download from iTunes, and we would be forever grateful to you.
Thanks :)”

Holly Dunn, “Daddy’s Hands”
It is one of my favorite country songs ever, and I think it would be great for a memorial for a father.
How about these?
Loretta Lynn “In The Garden”
Johnny Cash “Meet Me In Heaven”
Johnny Cash “Before My Time”
Jim Reeves “I’d Rather Have Jesus” (we played this one at my grandfather’s funeral)
I’ll try to think of some more, and update this.
Thought of some more….
George Jones “A Place In The Country”
Jim Eanes “In His Arms, I’m Not Afraid” (LOVE this one)
Patsy Cline “Just A Closer Walk With Thee”
If he was a southern man i suggest
Alan Jackson Small town southern Man.
Well I know it isn’t 50’s to 70’s country music, however for my mother’s funeral I sang a modified version of Hank Williams III “Five Shots of Whiskey”. Hank III sings very much like his grandfather. Hank Sr, btw, had a song called The Funeral.
If you are keen on religious music I’d suggest How Great Thou Art and Amazing Grace (Lee Greenwood or Elvis Presley).
There’s also “See You On The Other Side” by George Strait and “When I Get Where I’m Going” by Brad Paisley and Dolly Parton. David Allen Coe has a song called “Funeral Parlor Blues”.
Roger miller , 1 dying and ah burrying , show me the way to go home , johnny cash , I settled the old acount long ago , patsy cline lifes railway to heaven , merle haggard , jerico road ,
its not 50s-70s but i think a really good one is
Good to Go by Jason Aldean.
I’m sorry for your loss!
A couple good ones that are more recent but would be excellent for a funeral:
Brad Paisley and Dolly Parton-When I get Where I’m Going
When I get where I’m going
On the far side of the sky
The first thing that I’m gonna do
Is spread my wings and fly
I’m gonna land beside a lion
And run my fingers through his mane
Or I might find out what it’s like
To ride a drop of rain
[Chorus]
Yeah when I get where I’m going
There’ll be only happy tears
I will shed the sins and struggles
I have carried all these years
And I’ll leave my heart wide open
I will love and have no fear
Yeah when I get where I’m going
Don’t cry for me down here
I’m gonna walk with my grand daddy
And he’ll match me step for step
And I’ll tell him how I missed him
Every minute since he left
Then I’ll hug his neck
[Repeat chorus]
So much pain and so much darkness
In this world we stumble through
All these questions I can’t answer
So much work to do
But when I get where I’m going
And I see my maker’s face
I’ll stand forever in the light
Of his amazing grace
Yeah when I get where I’m going
There’ll be only happy tears
Hallelujah
I will love and have no fear
When I get where I’m going
Yeah when I get where I’m going
Vince Gill-Go Rest High on That Mountain
I know your life
On earth was troubled
And only you could know the pain
You weren’t afraid to face the devil
You were no stranger to the rain
Go rest high on that mountain
Son, you work on earth is done
Go to heaven a shoutin’
Love for the Father and Son
Oh, how we cried the day you left us
We gathered round your grave to grieve
I wish I could see the angels faces
When they hear your sweet voice sing
Go rest high on that mountain
Son, your work on earth is done
Go to heaven a shoutin’
Love for the Father and Son
And if you’re a girl you should check out Kippi Brannon’s Daddy’s Little Girl (I played it at my dad’s memorial)
Daddy take me with you
I promise I’ll be good
Daddy, it’s next time
And Mama said I could
Sitting in the front seat, riding downtown
For an ice cream cone, I’d wrap him around
My little fingers, tighter than my baby curls
You can make a tear go a long, long way when you’re
Daddy’s little girl
Walking down the isle
My eyes on Mr. Right
My boquet was shaking
But Daddy held on tight
Taking those last steps, Daddy and me
From the child to the woman I’d be
With a diamond on my finger
And my mama’s string of pearls
He gave me away ’cause I couldn’t stay
Daddy’s little girl
Well, he taught me my bible
From seven to thirteen
Taught me to drive when I was a wild thing
I reached and he prayed when I made some mistakes
That I wouldn’t have made if I’d've done it his way
Now he hugs me when he sees me
We talk about the past
He tries to give me money
And I try to give it back
He’s a book of advice
More than I need
The look in his eyes
As he’s saying to me
Let me help you while I can
While I’m still in this world
What will you do when your Daddy’s gone
And you’re Daddy’s little girl
What’ll I do when my daddy’s gone
Sorry for you lost! I think the song “you’ll be there’ by george strait is beautiful. Holly Dunn’s song “daddy’s hands” is a good one. Andy Griggs song “Heaven” , Alabama’s “angels among us” but when I lost my dad this last August we planned on playing Gene Watson’s “Farewell Party”
Sorry for your loss. But the song that I play each year on the anniversary date of my husbands death is by Vince Gill and it is called “Go Rest High on that Mountain”
