Are Eric Church and Jamey Johnson the future of Country Music?
Righty asked the question:
Travis Tritt had it right when he said “Country Aint Country No More” Most artists today have strayed from traditional country music and have crossed the line into the Pop Genre. While this can be good with artists like Tayor Swift getting the younger crowds feet wet and pulling them to CMT and Country radio, where is the country music? Where is the wholesome music about real life that has a positive message? Where are the songs about rural country life that I can relate to?

i dunno where all the good ol country music is going i just hope some of the newer artist will try to bring roots back. their are only a few new singers that hit me as country anymore. i wish some of the older country singers would never grow old so they can always sing the real stuff. but even some of the artist is going the same as the younger ones Why?? to bring in more people to country music.
Then too what i’m calling country maybe some older generations would call pop. i say bring back waylon, cash, pasty, and porter music. it at least had meaning .
the answer you seek can be found at Willies Place
on XM/Sirus Radio. ch13.
Well I’ll say this. If Jamey Johnson is the direction country musics heading to then I’ll hop on board. I liked his latest album. I just wish the Dj’s would play more of him.
The problem is Nashville doesn’t want Country anymore. I’m sure they’d say oh it doesn’t sell, but they have nothing to PROVE it doesn’t. They’d tell you Taylor Swift and Carrie Underwood and some of these other POP artists sell, but they’d sell in POP as well. Tim McGraw is still Country and last I checked he still sell. Darius Rucker got his song to #1 and who is arguing that it doesn’t sound like traditional Country? Although that should be expected from a man who was a fan of Dwight Yokum. It’s tough for artists to get a break if they aren’t going to do what Nashville wants. Look at Gary Allen. Montgomery Gentry is still doing Southern Rock, not quite Country, but an improvement over the Pop.
We can only hope but sadly Jamey is not getting the public recognition that he deserves and in my opinion is the only artist today that I feel harkens back to the day of Waylon. His latest album is fantastic and when I bought it, it renewed my faith in the ability to hear traditional music being produced today. I think for traditonal country lovers though, we have to search the “Americana” and “independant” labels to find the music that falls into this category.
Sadly, Nashville does hold the market in what listeners hear over general radio stations and it is more about the business and sales than it is about the music. The artist’s that respect their craft and the genre have moved to outside label’s or even creating their own.
