Check out Brad Paisley–he’s one of the all-time greatest guitarists and probably the best modern country guitarist.

For classic country, check out Jerry Reed (great guitarist with a great classic sound), Chet Atkins (one of the greatest and most influential guitarists of all time), Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, etc.

For modern country artists, check out Brooks & Dunn, Toby Keith, Jake Owen, Tracy Byrd, Sara Evans, Martina McBride, Miranda Lambert…check out cmt.com to see a list of a many more artists!

please do not listen to rascal flatts, carrie underwood, taylor swift and try to convice yourself they are country…because they’re not. they are pop singers in cowboy boots. Start off with some George Strait(amarillo by morning), Alan Jackson(little man), Hank Williams Jr.(family tradition), Travis Tritt(t-r-o-u-b-l-e), Dwight Yoakam(fast as you), Pam Tillis(shake the sugar tree), and of course don’t forget about the founders of country Hank Williams Sr(lost highway), George Jones(he stopped loving her today), Waylon Jennings(i’ve always been crazy), Loretta Lynn(fist city), Merle Haggard(mama tried)…if you have to listen to newer artist try Miranda Lambert(gunpowder and lead), Blake Shelton(austin), Brad Paisley(we danced), also alt-country is great–Shooter Jennings(daddy’s farm), Hank Williams III(country heros)…

The thing about country music is that it talks about real people and real people’s lives. The best way to start listening to country music, and to really fall in love with it, IMO, is to go to a concert, and experience it. I don’t know where you live, but you can probably find cheap concerts somewhere (like a county fair) and that way you can watch the people and see how they interact with the music and the performers without chunking out a ton of money. Turn your radio to a country station, and your TV to a country video station. I recommend GAC - they play more videos. CMT has gone to a less video, more goofy show format. You will find some songs that will just reach inside of you and take ahold of your heart, and you will find some songs that will irritate the heck out of you, but I guarantee you will fall in love with the genre if you try to experience it.

Good Luck and Welcome to the Country Music Lover’s Family!
